On Sunday, December 16th the Grade 8 Leadership class along, with Ms. Lee and two Grade 12 students, went to a beach clean up with Surfrider Vancouver. Each year about 0.1% of plastic ends up in the ocean, where it then causes harm to marine animals and their ecosystems. There is so much garbage in the Pacific Ocean now that they have created a patch bigger than Mexico, and some of this garbage comes from our own shores. Surfrider finds, on average, 758g of garbage at English bay during each cleanup, including over 500 cigarettes discarded on the beach. They conducted five cleanups this year, which are open to anyone who wants to come.
